Annexation of Greenland by the US is Unacceptable - Lawmaker
The Greenlandic lawmaker Kuno Fenger has deemed the annexation of the island by the United States unacceptable, accusing Denmark of depriving Greenland of its sovereignty in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“As a party that supports independence, I would almost call us patriots. We do not accept annexation. We do not accept the occupation of Greenland. And we also want to free ourselves from our current annexing state – Denmark, our current de facto colonizer,” he stated.
Fenger added that Greenland wishes to uphold international law and the right to self-determination in accordance with the UN Charter, as well as the decolonization process that followed the island's colonization by Denmark in 1953.
Greenland is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, former US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that the island should become part of the United States. Authorities in Denmark and Greenland have warned Washington against the annexation, emphasizing their expectation that their territorial integrity will be respected.
