EU to Seek Diplomatic Solution Regarding Greenland Issue: Bloomberg

The European Union will seek a diplomatic solution before imposing retaliatory measures against the United States regarding the situation in Greenland, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.

Previously, the Financial Times reported that EU countries were considering the possibility of imposing tariffs worth €93 billion against the United States following President Donald Trump's comments about tariffs related to Greenland.

“The EU is also discussing additional measures besides tariffs, but will seek a diplomatic solution first,” Bloomberg reports.

Reuters, citing EU diplomats, states that the EU currently has no plans to impose retaliatory measures against the United States.

On Saturday, Trump announced a 10% tariff on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland starting in February. This rate will eventually increase to 25% and remain in place until the U.S. finalizes a deal to purchase Greenland.

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, Trump has repeatedly stated that the island should become part of the United States. Danish and Greenlandic authorities have warned Washington against attempting to seize the island, emphasizing their expectation that their territorial integrity will be respected.
