Kaja Kallas Threatens Iran
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, told Politico that the EU could impose new sanctions against Iran following the brutal suppression of anti-government protests that may have resulted in hundreds of deaths.
The diplomat noted that Iran is already under sanctions for human rights violations, its nuclear program, and supporting Russia in the war in Ukraine. “And I am ready to propose additional sanctions in response to the brutal crackdown on protesters,” she emphasized.
Kallas stated that Iran has a “track record of suppressing protests,” and Europe is witnessing a harsh response from security forces. “Citizens are fighting for the future they choose and risking everything to be heard,” she added.
This statement from the head of EU diplomacy is the strongest response so far from an EU official regarding the suppression of protests in Iran.
