Zelensky on Possible Territorial Concessions

Ukraine is exploring a U.S.-proposed initiative concerning the establishment of a free economic zone in Donbas. This was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with Bloomberg.

According to him, the idea involves setting up a special legal and tax regime in the areas from which troops would be withdrawn. Zelensky noted that the proposed format is complex, but could be considered fair. He emphasized that the implementation of the plan would only be possible if Russia takes commensurate steps and if the initiative is discussed and supported within Ukraine.

The president indicated that a free economic zone could be established in certain areas of eastern Donbas and could be regarded as a compromise option. This would involve the withdrawal of combatants from the conflicting sides at a sufficient distance to ensure normal living conditions in the region.

Zelensky also presented an alternative approach, suggesting that military operations could cease while troops remain in their positions, with unresolved issues addressed diplomatically. According to him, this option would mean freezing the line of contact rather than the entire conflict, making it easier to manage for Ukraine's international partners.

In addition, the Ukrainian president stated that he intends to personally discuss specific commitments from U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington regarding potential aggression from the enemy. He stressed the importance of acquiring not only general promises but also clear mechanisms.
