European Parliament Bans Russian Gas Imports Until Autumn 2027

The European Parliament has adopted a law by an absolute majority that bans the import of Russian gas until autumn 2027. 500 Members of the European Parliament voted in favor, 120 against, and 32 abstained.

“Today’s vote sends a clear and powerful message: Europe will never again be dependent on Russian gas. This is a significant achievement for the EU and a historic turning point in European energy policy,” said Inese Vaidere, the lead rapporteur of the International Trade Committee.

The document still needs to receive official approval from the EU Council, after which it will be published in the EU's official journal and will come into force in 2026.
