Friedrich Merz's Proposal to the US President

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that several points in the US national security strategy are unacceptable from a European perspective. He made this remark while commenting on a document published last week.

"I see no necessity for the Americans to try to save democracy in Europe right now. If we needed to save it, we would do it ourselves," Merz noted.

According to the Chancellor, the general emphasis of the document was not surprising for him, but it reinforces his view that the European Union should increase its independence from Washington in terms of security and defense.

"In my discussions with the Americans, I say that the principle of 'America First' is good, but 'Only America' cannot be in your interest. In this world, you also need partners. One of those partners can be Europe. And if Europe is not an option, at least make Germany your partner," Merz pointed out.

Merz also announced that US President Donald Trump has accepted his invitation to visit Germany in 2026.
