Various Manifestations of Violence in Armenia are Numerous: Ombudsman Condemns Any Expression of Violence

The results of the ongoing monitoring conducted by the Office of the Human Rights Defender indicate that there are numerous manifestations of violence in Armenia. This is stated in a press release from the Ombudsman.

Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan strongly condemns any form of violence. It is undeniable that each case of violence requires a prompt, comprehensive, and effective investigation, and that those responsible must be held accountable.

At the same time, the Defender notes that while this is a necessary condition, it is not sufficient. Within the framework of the positive obligations undertaken, the state must take necessary and adequate measures to prevent each incidence of violence.

The Human Rights Defender also emphasizes that the existing public environment in Armenia directly contributes to the proliferation of various manifestations of violence. It is not only about the actions of individual actors but rather pertains to the predominant majority of those engaged in public activities.

Thus, it is a pressing necessity to implement significant changes in the culture of public engagement, including in the realm of public discourse.

Considering this, the Defender reaffirms her commitment to cooperate with all stakeholders in developing and implementing tools aimed at preventing any form of violence. The Defender stresses that taking action on this issue is of urgent importance, and any delay poses a threat to public safety and the reinforcement of democratic values.
