The US Will Export Civilian Nuclear Technologies to Armenia, Says Ambassador

The memorandum of understanding on comprehensive bilateral cooperation between Armenia and the United States regarding energy security aims to enhance Armenia's energy resilience by modernizing and expanding production, stated the U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Kristina Quinn during an annual summary address.

“Key factors for Armenia's energy security include capabilities in civilian nuclear energy. To this end, the United States and Armenia are negotiating what is known as the '123 Agreement', which would allow the U.S. to export civilian nuclear technologies to Armenia,” she said.

According to the ambassador, this agreement will facilitate cooperation as Armenia considers the prospect of transitioning from the Metsamor nuclear reactor to modern, flexible systems. “The United States, being a leader in modern nuclear energy industry, offers Armenia numerous opportunities for the safe and secure operation of nuclear energy and energy independence for the future. Our partnership around energy security will promote the diversification of Armenia's energy resources, the modernization of the grid, and the reliable supply of energy for businesses and communities,” she added.
