Moscow Claims NATO Should Not Expand Eastward: Putin

Moscow insists that the promises made in the 1990s regarding the non-expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance eastward should be fulfilled. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview with India Today, according to TASS.

“We are not asking for anything unusual or unexpected, falling from the sky. We are simply insisting on the fulfillment of promises already made to us. These were not invented yesterday. They were given to Russia back in the 1990s. [NATO] should not expand eastward; this was publicly declared,” emphasized Putin.

The Russian president noted that several waves of NATO expansion have taken place since then, with the peak being the inclusion of Ukraine into NATO.
