Russia Will Not Escape Responsibility, EU Commissioner

The EU has stated that any peace agreement regarding Ukraine cannot absolve Russia of responsibility for war crimes. Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders told Politico that negotiators must exclude the possibility of the Kremlin escaping accountability for the war.

Reynders reminded that Ukrainian and international bodies have documented hundreds of thousands of war crimes. A UN commission has previously found the Russian authorities guilty of crimes against humanity.

The EU and its partners are working on the establishment of a special tribunal, and the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Putin due to the deportation of Ukrainian children.

According to Reynders, the idea of amnesty, which was included in early plans by Trump, would be a catastrophic mistake. If the crimes go unpunished, Europe risks a new wave of Russian aggression.
