Avinyan Discusses Air Quality: Proposed Solutions

The Mayor of Yerevan, Tigran Avinyan, addressed the air quality issues present in the capital, emphasizing that long-term solutions must largely be implemented outside of Yerevan's borders. He reminded that active discussions regarding air quality have been taking place recently, driven by the fact that by 2024, measurement devices connected to a GIS system are required to be installed at all major construction sites.

According to the Mayor, data from the 175 existing devices indicate that air quality starts to deteriorate from mid-November and improves around mid-March. Avinyan pointed out that the most painful aspect of the problem is its complex prerequisites: “Firstly, our geographic position and the weather conditions during this season play a role, as the air arrives and lingers in our region for a significant amount of time.”

He noted that there are existing solutions, which are quite complex, and promised to elaborate on them. According to the mayor, creating hundreds of hectares of new forested and evergreen green spaces is necessary for long-term results, which could act as a barrier for incoming winds.

Regarding short-term solutions, Avinyan announced that the following exercise has been carried out: if they receive advance information about 10-15 critical days and conduct administrative work outside of the usual parameters during this period, it could have an impact for up to 45-60 days.
