Zaluzhnyi Discusses Conflict Resolution Without Complete Victory
According to Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the former chief commander of Ukraine's armed forces and ambassador to the UK, Ukraine can negotiate peace with Russia even without achieving its desired complete victory. “We, Ukrainians, undoubtedly strive for complete victory. But we also cannot exclude the possibility of a long-term ending to the war,” he stated, as quoted by the Ukrainian publication ‘Strana’.
Zaluzhnyi believes that peace, even in the context of a potential future conflict, allows for political changes, profound reforms, as well as economic growth and the return of citizens. In this regard, he noted that “war does not always end with one side's victory and the other side's defeat.”
When peace is established, according to the former chief commander, it will be possible to speak about the beginning of forming a secure and maximally protected state. Furthermore, Zaluzhnyi urged the establishment and strengthening of the foundations of a just state through the fight against corruption and fair judicial processes.
