Washington Will Only Agree to Provide Ukraine Security Guarantees After Signing Peace Agreement: Rubio

The U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has informed European allies that the United States wishes to first reach a peaceful agreement and only after that consider providing Ukraine with any security guarantees. This was reported by Politico, citing a European diplomat and a second source.

According to the publication's sources, this condition has been at the core of U.S. offers to Kyiv over the past week. During a phone conversation with European leaders on November 25, Rubio stated that Donald Trump would negotiate long-term security guarantees for Ukraine that would provide Kyiv with a 'sense of security', according to Politico.

Another European diplomat noted that Rubio mentioned that security guarantees for Ukraine are a priority for Trump's administration and are being discussed separately. He added that these are among the topics on which agreement has already been reached, and the U.S. wants to expedite the completion of the entire package.

Politico's source asserted that Rubio generally pointed out other issues that need to be resolved after the agreement is signed, including the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the fate of frozen Russian assets in Europe.
