Criminal Case Launched Against Suspects in Murder of Chechen Woman in Armenia
A criminal case has been launched in Armenia against suspects in the murder of a Chechen woman, Aishat Baymuradova. This was reported by the Dozhd agency, citing a response from the SOS crisis group.
The Investigative Committee of Armenia has initiated proceedings for premeditated murder. Law enforcement agencies assert that the case has been opened against two individuals, who have been placed under arrest as a preventive measure and are currently being sought. Specific details about the individuals have not been disclosed.
The SOS Committee noted that "the investigators recognize these individuals," however, they have not previously been included on any wanted lists and may have left Armenia.
According to Ostorozhno Novosti, relatives of the deceased suggest that the murder may involve a 30-year-old Chechen, Said-Khamzat Baisarov. It has been reported that investigators have already interrogated witnesses, searched the apartment where Baymuradova was murdered, and have begun forensic genetic examinations.
It is noteworthy that Aishat Baymuradova had come to Armenia from Russia due to domestic violence issues. She did not return from an evening walk in Yerevan on October 15. The police reported on October 20 that she was found dead in a rented apartment in the city center.
Armenian human rights defenders are calling for an independent and transparent investigation into Aishat Baymuradova's murder. They have pointed out that her death serves as a reminder that "women fleeing violence are still not fully safe even in places where they seek protection."
