Israel Urges New York Jews to Leave the City: Details

The Israeli Minister of Diaspora Affairs, Amichai Shikli, has called on Jews in New York City to leave in response to the election of Zohar Mamdani as mayor. The minister described Mamdani as a "supporter of HAMAS" and stated that "the flame of the city’s freedom has been extinguished." Shikli warned that New York is "heading towards the same decline that London has already experienced," and expressed that the community, which comprises approximately 1.3 million Jews, "should not expect anything good from the new mayor."

Zohar Mamdani is a politician of Ugandan descent and a representative of the left wing of the Democratic Party in the United States. He has repeatedly criticized Israeli actions in Gaza, characterizing them as a "genocidal war," while also emphasizing that he does not support HAMAS and considers the October 7, 2023 attack a military crime.
