Trump Urges Republicans to Immediately End Shutdown
US President Donald Trump has called on Republicans in the Senate to end the shutdown by November 5, depriving Democrats of the opportunity to block budget approval through the filibuster rule (which allows for prolonged discussions). This statement was made by the President during a breakfast meeting with senators.
"I think it’s very important; we need to open the country. And the way to do that today at noon is to eliminate the filibuster rule," he stated.
Trump warned that without the cancellation of this procedure (which allows the minority to obstruct decision-making), Congress will be paralyzed for the upcoming years. He emphasized that Congress has always agreed to temporary extensions in the past, but for the first time, that has not happened this time.
The new financial year in the US began on October 1, but Congress has yet to agree on the budget, resulting in the government being unable to function. Such a shutdown in the United States entails the cessation of operations of certain state institutions directly funded by Congress due to the lack of an agreed budget for the upcoming financial year.
Earlier, Trump had stated that the temporary halt in government operations could be used to make massive cuts to staff and payments. He insisted that the budget-related issue arose from the Democrats' position, and that the White House is using the current situation to rid Republicans of unwanted programs.
