Restrictions on Personal Vehicle Use in Yerevan - Tigran Avinyan
The Mayor of Yerevan, Tigran Avinyan, addressed the issue of traffic congestion in the capital during a joint meeting of the National Assembly's permanent committees, noting that these congestions are a result of increased economic activity.
According to Avinyan, approximately 11,000 new vehicles have been registered in Yerevan in just the past year, not counting vehicles from surrounding regions. He pointed out that the congestions are also related to the increase in citizens' purchasing power and the growing number of cars.
Avinyan announced the establishment of a crisis management commission to improve traffic in Yerevan, which has already held its first meeting. He stated that the commission's short-term solutions focus on enhancing public transportation capabilities and restricting the use of personal vehicles.
The Mayor also mentioned plans to implement technological solutions, such as the installation of self-regulating traffic lights at intersections, which will take into account the intensity of traffic flows at different times.
Furthermore, Avinyan explained that amendments to the law on local self-governance in Yerevan will also help reduce traffic congestion. He indicated that a fundamental agreement has been reached with the Ministry of Internal Affairs to remove incorrectly parked vehicles that disrupt traffic using tow trucks.
