The Issue of Individuals and Prisoners of War Held in Azerbaijan Remains a Serious Problem: Simonian
Significant progress has been made towards establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as evidenced by the joint declaration signed by the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan on August 8, 2025, in Washington, with the participation of the President of the United States. On the same day, the foreign ministers of both countries also signed the preliminary text of the agreement on Peace and Establishment of Interstate Relations.
During the 12th plenary session of the Eurasionet Parliamentary Assembly held in Yerevan, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonian, addressed the peace processes between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the declaration signed in Washington, and new initiatives for regional cooperation. Simonian stated, “The adoption of the declaration and the preliminary signing of the peace agreement signal that peace has already been established. Nevertheless, a number of humanitarian issues remain unresolved, particularly the question of individuals and prisoners of war held in Azerbaijan, which is still a serious problem that needs to be addressed. Another crucial humanitarian priority is to clarify the fate of many missing individuals.”
Simon has added, “Armenia will continue to cooperate with the United States and mutually agreed third parties to implement the 'Trump Road' (TRIPP) initiative for international peace and prosperity. This includes developing railways, as well as prospects for constructing highways, pipelines, electric transmission lines, and communication cables between Armenia, Azerbaijan, and neighboring countries.”
