Over 60 Dead in Clashes with Police as War on Drug Dealers Begins in Rio de Janeiro
At least 64 people have died in police operations against the 'Comando Vermelho' gang in the northern suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. Among the deceased are four police officers, according to Rio de Janeiro state governor Claudio Castro. Over 80 people have been arrested.
Both civil and military police participated in the operation, with approximately 2500 officers entering the favelas in the morning, leading to immediate clashes. The 'Comando Vermelho' responded with gunfire, burning barricades, and drones dropping explosives. There are also reports of dozens of injuries, including civilians caught in crossfire.
