There Is a Deep Fear of War Among Germans: Merz
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that there is a deep fear of war among Germans and that he does not share this sentiment.
“The fear of war is deeply rooted in part of our population. I do not share it, but I can understand it,” Merz said in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung. He added that “it is fundamentally right to look for all paths to peace.”
“As a country, we mistakenly thought that peace in Europe would be permanent and ensured automatically,” Merz continued. “Germany has, fortunately, not experienced war for decades,” he noted. “This should not be taken for granted, and we must constantly discuss this issue,” the chancellor declared.
