Drivers Threaten to Block Roads, Demand Negotiations with Russia
Following previous protests, no positive changes have been recorded. This was stated by one of the participants during a protest by truck drivers in front of the government today.
It should be noted that the drivers are demanding negotiations with Russia to change the conditions of the tightened legislation in Russia, which stipulates that foreign citizens can stay in the country for up to 90 days within a year.
"No calls have been made, nor has anything been said. But we have information from the EAEU regarding the suspension of this law for truck drivers from Central Asia," said one of the protesters.
The participant noted that previously they were approached by the Minister of Economy, Levon Papoyan: "What did he say? That we should be satisfied. He said that they are dealing with it at a high level. I can say something similar—‘we are working on it.’”
The driver indicated that they may block roads: "Since 2018, this is how they solve issues." Another driver emphasized the need for a competent person in this matter: "This is a state issue. If we don’t work for the state, bringing wheat and other goods, our country will be left hungry. If they think that the Russian or Georgian will bring it... Why should the Georgian, the Russian, bring it, not the Armenian?"
It is noteworthy that since September 1 of this year, citizens of non-visa regime countries entering Russia for non-employment purposes can stay for 90 days in a calendar year, whereas previously they could stay for 90 days within six months. The drivers point out that Kazakhstan has managed to achieve similar arrangements for Kazakh drivers, hence Armenia should also attempt to resolve this issue.
