Dairy Products in Armenia Have Sharply Increased in Price: Are Producers Competing for Higher Prices?

In the last nearly two weeks, dairy products in Armenia have sharply increased in price. For example, sour cream priced at 670 dram has now become 720 dram. It is noteworthy that the majority of producers have raised prices on a range of products, including yogurt, cheese, sour cream, milk, and more. In some stores, consumers have noticed price increases of up to 100 dram.

This information was reported by 'Hetq'. Experts have various interpretations and doubts regarding the price hikes in dairy products. The most common opinion is that the introduction of QR codes is the basis for the price increases; however, this argument is not convincing or comprehensive for some experts. Producers are reluctant to discuss the price increases.

The Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition is still investigating whether there are dominant players in the market, and if so, they may initiate proceedings.

The President of the Union of Armenian Dairy Producers, Khachatur Poghosyan, cites several reasons for the recent price hikes in dairy products. He points out that the implementation of QR codes is one reason, aimed at controlling the entire sales chain of products. Starting January 1 of the coming year, dairy producers will be required to affix control QR codes to their products. This is a decision made by the government, adopted back in August 2024. Some companies have already begun using QR codes, and these codes are appearing on their products.
