Lawyer on the Outcome of Samvel Karapetyan's Arrest Extension Request
Naturally, the outcome would have been acceptable if the detention request, which was the second extension request, was rejected altogether due to the lack of reasonable suspicion. However, there is no doubt that this criminal case will eventually be terminated and forgotten; its end is inevitable.
This was stated by lawyer Aram Vardevanyan during a conversation with journalists ahead of a rally organized by the 'Our Way' movement, discussing the outcome of businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan's detention extension request.
'As you can imagine, the court ultimately found that reasonable suspicion was established with only one of the three episodes, and that is the criminal case linked to the famous interview, where it was simply stated, 'We will participate in the protection of the church.' In the end, how can this be a matter for a criminal case?' Vardevanyan said.
In response to journalists' questions regarding new charges that have been filed, Vardevanyan stated: 'None of them have overcome the threshold of reasonable suspicion. The threshold for proving reasonable suspicion is quite low, and despite that, the entire group of alleged economic crimes did not overcome that threshold. But what is most surprising is that over 50 investigators are involved in Samvel Karapetyan's criminal case. They come to court asking for time to carry out additional actions; this is already absurd.'
The lawyer added, 'If you ask what actions they are taking, it’s unclear; we do not understand. In the subsequent hearings, when we ask, we receive no answers. No actions have been carried out regarding Samvel Karapetyan. The court also noted that during this period, we had applied to the investigators 3-4 times to take action regarding Samvel Karapetyan. They have not acted.'
