Doubts Deepen in the Ruling Party: What Was Really Signed in Washington

Recent statements by the Azerbaijani president about the 'Zangezur Corridor' and Armenia's capitulation have stirred unrest within the ruling team, according to the 'Hraparak' newspaper.

The newspaper reports that the leadership of the ruling Civil Contract party has expressed dissatisfaction, questioning how they can tell the public that they have established peace and urge them to vote for them. They are struggling to convince people that they have brought peace through the Washington agreements.

While reassurances have been given that Aliyev makes such statements for his domestic audience, discussions within the party have not ceased. The ranks are exploring various hypotheses. Some suspect that a different document may have actually been signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and that Aliyev has allowed Pashinyan to present it as a peace agreement to use in the elections, presumably because he would like to see the Civil Contract party retained in power so that all his plans can gradually come to fruition.

When questioned about why such statements hurt Pashinyan's approval ratings, the Civil Contract party explained that it is a form of blackmail intended to gain more later.
