Levon Ter-Petrosyan to Play a Significant Role in Upcoming Parliamentary Elections, Says Zurabyan
Former President of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan will play a significant role in the upcoming parliamentary elections. This was stated by Levon Zurabyan, Vice President of the Armenian National Congress (ANC), in an interview with Sputnik Armenia.
According to him, the role of the elections should not be underestimated or exaggerated, as there are other primary goals. "To create an alternative political force for the people, based on both a programmatic platform and a unification that can enable a nationwide movement in Armenia. This is the main objective," he listed.
When asked whether the ANC would be the basis for this unification and whether they would participate in the elections, Zurabyan reminded that they are the political force that brought independence to Armenia, led for seven years, and had a significant role in subsequent political processes.
“Naturally, we all bear responsibility. Ter-Petrosyan, as the founding president, also has responsibility for everything that has happened, because the subsequent leaders of Armenia deviated from the path he envisioned for establishing peace—reaching peace through positions of strength. Today we see the miserable situation our country is in, how much heavy defeat and loss it has gone through. Under these circumstances, neither the founding president nor the political force he leads can remain indifferent,” Zurabyan continued.
He stated that there is currently no political party or team in today’s political landscape that could form such a movement solely within its narrow circles, meaning that a revolutionary force is absent in the field, but it must be created. Zurabyan assured that everything would not revolve around them, as they are ready to cooperate with other forces.
"Cooperation should be built on realistic and pragmatic political principles. This is not about the false peace that has led the country to its current state, but about a real program based on geopolitical balance. This program should ensure not only stable peace but also the economic development of Armenia. There must be a necessity for constructing a railway connecting Yerevan with Meghri, establishing cable connections, and improving automotive infrastructure. All of this must be combined with significant technological initiatives. Without occupying primary positions in niche sectors and cutting-edge technologies, Armenia cannot secure its stable place under the global economic sun," Zurabyan added.
The Vice President of the ANC emphasized the importance of strengthening democracy, as the current processes in Armenia are aimed at weakening democracy.
