Yerevan Has the Worst Air Quality in the South Caucasus, Says UN

Yerevan has the worst air quality in the South Caucasus. This was announced by UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia, Françoise Jacob, during the forum titled “The Future of Banking: Innovation and Development Perspectives” on September 23.

According to her, this impacts the country’s attractiveness. She also pointed out the active desertification of Armenian lands and the pollution of rivers due to agricultural, construction, and mining activities. Jacob estimates that Armenia spends only 0.6% of its GDP on environmental protection.

She added that Armenia is making progress in its peace agenda, which opens new opportunities. Jacob noted that this allows for the creation of an appropriate environment for developing a green economy, including within the framework of COP17.

According to her, banks play a significant role in financing the sustainable development agenda. Jacob expressed confidence that Armenian banks can contribute to the development of a green economy, forest restoration, and other areas.

She emphasized that in preparation for COP17, Armenia must demonstrate its commitment to biodiversity protection. Jacob explained that the conference calls for a global funding increase of $200 billion for this sector.
