Turkey Lifts Additional Import Tariffs on American Goods

Turkey Lifts Additional Import Tariffs on American Goods

The Turkish authorities have lifted several additional import tariffs on American goods that have been in effect since 2018. The decision was published in the official government gazette.

The tariff increases applied to 33 product categories, including alcoholic beverages, passenger cars, tobacco, and cosmetics. According to the Turkish Ministry of Trade, the decision was made after "successful and effective negotiations." The ministry stated, "We will continue to work and implement policies aimed at achieving a trade volume of $100 billion, which is one of the main goals of the economic relations between Turkey and the United States."

The decision to lift the additional tariffs comes against the backdrop of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to the United States. He is set to participate in the UN General Assembly in New York and will hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on September 25.

Turkey imposed additional tariffs on American goods in 2018 during Trump’s first term in office. This was a retaliatory measure against the increased tariffs placed by the U.S. on several Turkish products.
