We Have No Hope for a Fair Trial: Defender of Bishop Mikael
The judge Arpine Mkrtchyan, handling the case of Shiraz Diocese leader Bishop Mikael Ajapahyan, seems to fear the people who demand accountability from her more than the law itself. This was stated by one of the Bishop's defenders, Ara Zohrabyan, during a conversation with journalists after today's court session.
"It is clear that the person has done nothing wrong, yet today he is in custody. This is the first time I have encountered such injustice in my practice. During the final speech, the Bishop did not look at the judge as he had no hope that any reasoned words could influence her. The Bishop was speaking to the audience while the judge was fixated on a single point, not looking at the Bishop. We have no hope for a fair trial where the judge would have the courage to make a just verdict. The judge and the prosecutor will be held accountable if they take unlawful actions," said Ara Zohrabyan.
It is important to note that today's court session has been postponed and rescheduled for September 22. On that day, the defense side will present its rebuttals, the Bishop will have the last word, and the court will adjourn to make a verdict.
