Has the People Surrendered or Have You Led Us to Catastrophe? Marukyan Questions Sargsyan
Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the Bright Armenia party, has commented on the recent statements made by Armenia's third president Serzh Sargsyan outside the court. The president stated, “Under our rule, it was possible to sign a peace agreement under conditions 20 times better than these. However, that did not correspond to the demands of our people at that time.”
According to Marukyan, Sargsyan indirectly accuses the people of accepting humiliating terms and one-sided concessions, implying that in his time, the people would not have agreed to such conditions.
“If there was a risk of losing power due to potential compromises, then they promoted a no-compromise rhetoric... However, leaders should have presented to the people that a catastrophe of war was forthcoming and that compromises must be made,” said Marukyan, adding that Sargsyan places the blame on the populace.
“Has the people become the surrendering party, or have you led us to this catastrophe with your policies?” Marukyan stated, emphasizing that former presidents should not return to power; rather, they should apologize and step aside.
