Fidan's Statement is More of an Optimistic Forecast than a Claim: Suren Surenyants

Political scientist Suren Surenyants made two observations regarding the meeting that took place yesterday between Armenia's Foreign Minister Mirzoyan and Turkey's special representative for the Armenia-Turkey normalization process, Serdar Kilic, at the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He wrote: "Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan is expected in the first half of 2026: 'As soon as the final agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan is signed, we will quickly normalize our relations with Armenia.'"

"Turkey continues to condition its relations with Armenia on the Armenian-Azerbaijani process. Until a peace treaty is signed, there will be no significant progress in Armenian-Turkish relations. I have detailed this issue in my previous post. The question remains: where does Fidan's confidence come from that there will be a peace treaty in the first half of 2026? Baku demands constitutional changes from Armenia, which cannot be carried out within that timeframe through illegal procedures or political consensus. Therefore, Fidan's statement is more of an optimistic forecast than a claim supported by factual evidence," wrote Surenyants.
