A Professional Commission for Regulating Terminology to be Established

In the field of language, we need more extensive and conceptual changes, and our ministry has been working with the Language Committee on developing a conceptual framework for language policy, which we will soon present for public discussion. However, with this package, we have tried to address issues that have primary necessity. The focus is on the process of regulating terminology. This was stated today by Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan during a session of the National Assembly, while presenting the draft amendments to the Law on Language for first reading.

“We propose to establish an enabling norm for the formation of a relevant professional commission that will be involved in the process of regulating terminology used in state documentation, as well as organizing this process. This has very practical and applicable significance. We deemed it necessary to separate the comprehensive conceptual framework of language policy from the legislative package of changes arising from it and present it separately, so that we can provide faster regulations on issues of applied significance,” the minister said.

Deputy Gegham Nazaryan raised a question related to another issue concerning language, that is, the Armenian language is being violated during official meetings. The minister responded that the Law on Language also regulates speaking in another language simultaneously, and this is within the framework of the law. However, if there is any manifestation that falls outside legislative regulations, such cases can also be referred to the Language Committee, and the proceedings are examined.
