Armenian Constitution Still Contains Provisions that Contradict Azerbaijan, Elchin Amirbekov

On August 8, a peace agreement was preliminarily signed in Washington between Azerbaijan and Armenia, marking an important step towards normalizing relations between the two countries. This was announced by Elchin Amirbekov, the special representative of the President of Azerbaijan for special assignments.

“However, it is important to note that at this stage we are talking only about preliminarily signing and not final signing. For the signing and implementation of the peace agreement, the Armenian side must take specific steps. In particular, the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia still contains provisions that contradict the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan, expressing unacceptable territorial claims,” said Amirbekov.

“Therefore, to establish lasting peace, the fundamental law of Armenia must be aligned with the text and spirit of the peace agreement already preliminarily signed by both countries. Nevertheless, the preliminary signing of the agreement is a significant progress. This is the result of constructive dialogue conducted in a bilateral format, the political will of both sides, and, of course, the constructive support of a number of international partners. We particularly appreciate the personal contribution and efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump. If this process continues seriously and decisively, a new chapter in the history of the South Caucasus may open based on cooperation, stability, and mutual prosperity,” Amirbekov added.
