Secret Operation of U.S. Special Forces in North Korea Revealed

The secret operation of U.S. special forces in North Korea has been revealed, according to the NYT agency. In 2019, U.S. naval forces attempted to conduct a covert operation in North Korea; however, it failed.

The mission was to install an electronic device that would allow U.S. intelligence to listen in on conversations between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and President Trump during nuclear negotiations. Eavesdropping on communications in the DPRK was considered a strategic 'blind spot' that Washington aimed to eliminate.

At night, the unit landed on a rocky shore donned in black wetsuits. Nearby, a North Korean boat appeared, directing its lights onto the water. Fearing they had been discovered, U.S. naval forces opened fire. All crew members of the North Korean vessel were killed in the gunfire exchange. The unit retreated without installing the listening device.

The operation had never been publicly disclosed by either North Korea or U.S. officials. The publication learned about the failed mission through conversations with about 20 individuals, including current officials, members of President Trump's first administration, and former and present military personnel who were aware of the operation.
