High-Profile Arrest: Young Woman Suspected of Spying for Azerbaijan

Approximately two months ago, a high-profile arrest occurred within the Armenian diplomatic corps, which attempts were made to keep secret. This was reported by the newspaper Hraparak.

Ashkhen Aleksanyan, a consul from Armenia in Austria, was arrested at the airport upon her return to Armenia. The young woman was found to have documents that raised suspicions of espionage on behalf of Azerbaijan.

Following that, the National Security Service conducted a full day's search in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, examining computers and reviewing documents. It was decided to keep this arrest confidential, as it could become a significant scandal.

The issue is that before appointing anyone to a high position within the diplomatic corps, the National Security Service checks their background, any suspicious connections, and so on. Appointments are made only after a thorough examination, with the results reported to the appointing authority.

Now it appears that either there was negligence, which raises questions of accountability, or the appointing authorities turned a blind eye to certain circumstances. Moreover, within the framework of this cover-up, information about Ashkhen Aleksanyan has been removed from the internet and all open sources, including official news about her appointment.

However, an old employee of the Foreign Ministry stated in an interview with the newspaper that they know Ashkhen very well; initially, she held a civil servant position, then she moved to the consular section of the Foreign Ministry and received a diplomat title, after which there is no further information about her.
