EU and UK Issue Statement on Trump-Putin Discussions
The leaders of the EU and the UK have released a joint statement following discussions between the Presidents of the United States and Russia, held in Alaska.
“President Trump had a press briefing early this morning with U.S. officials and President Zelenskyy, following the meeting with the Russian President in Alaska on August 15, 2025. The leaders applauded President Trump’s efforts to halt the killings in Ukraine, end Russia’s aggressive war, and achieve a just and lasting peace. As President Trump stated, ‘There will be no deal until a deal is made.’ President Trump’s next steps should involve further negotiations with President Zelenskyy, whom he will meet soon.
We are also prepared to work with President Trump and President Zelenskyy to convene a trilateral summit with Europe’s support. We understand that Ukraine must have reliable security guarantees to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We welcome President Trump’s announcement that the U.S. is ready to provide security guarantees.
The coalition of volunteers is ready to play an active role. There should be no restrictions imposed on cooperation with Ukraine’s armed forces or third countries. Russia cannot veto Ukraine’s membership in the EU and NATO. Ukraine itself must make decisions about its territory. International borders must not be changed through the use of force. Our support for Ukraine will continue. We are determined and want to do more to preserve Ukraine’s strength in order to achieve a cessation of hostilities and establish a just and sustainable peace.
“As long as the killings continue in Ukraine, we are prepared to exert pressure on Russia. We will continue to strengthen sanctions and undertake broader economic measures to apply pressure on the Russian military economy until a just and sustainable peace is established. Ukraine can rely on our unwavering solidarity as we strive for a peace that guarantees the vital security interests of Ukraine and Europe,” the EU and UK joint statement concluded.
