The Law Yielded to Political Processes: Aram Vardevanyan
Unfortunately, I must say that it is impossible to see the law in this judicial act. To say that a person who has been in detention for more than 55 days for a medium-level crime should continue that detention for another 2 months is unacceptable. The law will prevail nonetheless. Samvel Karapetyan shares a similar perspective. This was declared by Aram Vardevanyan, the lawyer of Samvel Karapetyan.
“In law, especially in the mission of the judge, there is no 'golden mean.' Either there is law, or there is no law. In the case of Judge Davtyan, we must state that the law was subordinated to political processes,” Vardevanyan added.
Vardevanyan noted that yesterday’s court session involved the investigator’s motion regarding the well-known charges of calls for violence. “The court established by judicial act that the bundle of these charges does not meet the threshold of reasonable suspicion, meaning there is no reasonable suspicion. At the same time, the court found that there is reasonable suspicion related to calls for public violence against the government,” the lawyer explained.
“In other words, being a public figure who has declared his political aspirations and is forming a political team, he should not be expected to hide from the investigation for fearing an alleged medium-level punishment, which may just be a fine,” the lawyer stated.
“The court dismissed the money laundering charges in Karapetyan's case, leaving the charge of making public calls,” Vardevanyan added.
