Baku Expects Constitutional Changes in Armenia, Says Amırbekov
On August 8, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint declaration in the White House in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Oxu.Az, Elchin Amırbekov, the Special Representative of the President of Azerbaijan, stated on August 11 to NE Global that the signing of the document in Washington reaffirmed Azerbaijan's peace agenda.
"The provision on the preliminary signing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia recognizes that further actions are required for the signing and ratification of the agreement, meaning that Baku expects constitutional changes in Armenia to eliminate the existing territorial demands against Azerbaijan to ensure the signing of the agreement," the diplomat noted.
Amırbekov also told NE Global that one of the main provisions of the joint declaration is the commitment to open transport and communication links between the two countries, specifically the necessity of unimpeded communication between the main part of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. As known, within the framework of the deal, the United States will assist in building a major transit corridor named the "Trump Corridor" for this purpose.
"The joint appeal to the OSCE Chairperson regarding the closure of the Minsk Process and related structures is also an important step toward eliminating one of the main obstacles to peace and resolution," Amırbekov added.
