US Responds to Reports of Proposal for Unblocking Communications to Armenia and Azerbaijan

The US State Department has responded to reports suggesting that the administration of President Donald Trump has made a proposal to Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the unblocking of communications in the South Caucasus.

In response to a request from Armenpress, the State Department's press office stated that they have no information regarding the reports published in the media. “The United States supports efforts aimed at strengthening peace and stability in the South Caucasus. We do not have any information that we can provide regarding these media publications,” the spokesperson for the State Department's press service stated.

According to these sources, the American proposal is similar to a version circulated years ago by the European Union, which was based on an agreement between Russia and Georgia after the 2008 war. Under this proposal, the parties intended to hand over the management of routes passing through the disputed regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to an independent Swiss company, which would be obligated to then share the logistical data with all interested parties.

Earlier, analyst Olesya Vardanyan from the Carnegie Endowment, referencing two foreign diplomats, indicated that the Trump administration has made a proposal to Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding a route linking Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan through Armenian territory.
