British Navy Under Attack as Gunfire Continues
The British Navy has reported an incident involving a commercial vessel off the coast of Yemen. The ship came under attack from small boats that opened fire using small arms and hand grenades.
The incident involving the commercial vessel occurred 51 nautical miles southeast of the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah, according to a statement from the Royal Navy's Maritime Trade Operations center. According to UKMTO, the ship's crew also returned fire, and the clash is ongoing. Details of the incident are under investigation.
It is worth noting that following the escalation of conflict in the Gaza Strip in the autumn of 2023, Yemen's Houthi rebel movement, known as Ansar Allah, warned that it would strike Israeli territory and disrupt the passage of related ships through the Red Sea and the Bab-el-Mandeb strait until operations in the Palestinian enclave ceased.
