Rare Event in Earth's Atmosphere
The International Space Station has captured images of one of the rare types of huge electrical discharge phenomena in Earth's atmosphere. This powerful jet stream reaches an altitude of about 100 kilometers. It penetrates the atmosphere from thunderstorms to the edge of space, creating bright branching flashes. Such phenomena are themselves extremely rare, and the photographs taken represent a unique event.
