U.S. Lifts Sanctions on Syria

The U.S. sanctions program against Syria is being lifted. This was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, who signed an executive order to this effect.

The order allows for an end to Syria's isolation from the international financial system and is based on Washington’s promise to assist in rebuilding the country after the devastating civil war.

The order takes effect from July 1. “This move will enable the U.S. to maintain sanctions against former President Bashar al-Assad, his associates, human rights violators, those involved in illegal drug trafficking, chemical weapons activities, and entities associated with the Islamic State and ISIS, as well as individuals linked to Iran,” stated White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
