25-Year Party Member: Is He Unbiased? Agnesa Hamoyan to Galyan
During the discussion of the Constitutional Court judge candidate, National Assembly deputy Agnesa Hamoyan reminded that Artak Zeynalanyan has been a member of the "Republic" party's political council since 2011 and only recently ceased his membership. She asked the justice minister Surbuhi Galyan, who introduced the candidate, whether a person who has engaged in active party activities for 25 years can become independent and impartial after leaving the party upon being elected as a judge of the Constitutional Court.
Galyan noted that as a lawyer, she is obliged to be guided solely by the law and regulations, and emphasized that the law does not consider previous party membership as a barrier. "Regarding future behavior, the answer is also in the law because a person appointed to this position should be apolitical and guided by the law," Galyan stated.
It is worth mentioning that the National Assembly is currently discussing the issue of electing a judge for the Constitutional Court. The former Minister of Justice Artak Zeynalanyan has been nominated for this position.
