Glaciers Worldwide Are Rapidly Melting, Says Levon Azizyan
Sergei Bodrov's life was claimed by a glacier, which now poses a renewed threat. Levon Azizyan, director of the Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center, announced this on Facebook.
“Glaciers worldwide are melting rapidly. In the last 20 years, this process has accelerated by almost twofold. Scientists are raising alarms about concerning predictions, for example, Africa's highest peak, Kilimanjaro, could completely lose its ice cap by 2030. In the Caucasus, glaciers are also gradually disappearing. However, among them is a glacier that is not shrinking, but rather, growing. This is the infamous Kolka glacier, known for its tragic memories. Its activity, however, is a cause for serious concern, not joy.
Let us recall that in September 2002, a massive avalanche from the Kolka glacier resulted in a disaster, claiming at least 125 lives. Among the victims were members of the film crew led by director Sergei Bodrov Jr.,” he wrote.
