UK Threatens to Sue Roman Abramovich: Details

The UK government has threatened to sue former Chelsea Football Club owner and Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich to transfer the £2.5 billion obtained from the club's sale to Ukraine.

The proceeds from the sale have been frozen in a UK bank account, and sanctions have been imposed on Abramovich, as reported by BBC News.

The UK government wants the funds allocated for humanitarian assistance in Ukraine, but Abramovich stated his desire for the money to go to "all victims of the war in Ukraine." In a joint statement from Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy, it was mentioned, "While the door to negotiations will remain open, we are fully prepared to pursue this through the courts if necessary."

They declared their intention to "ensure that those suffering in Ukraine can access these funds as soon as possible." Delays in the disbursement of the funds are due to disagreements between the UK government and its lawyers.

Abramovich was granted a special license to sell Chelsea after the war began in Ukraine, provided he could prove that he would not profit from the sale. Due to UK sanctions, he is unable to benefit from the £2.5 billion in revenue from the sale, but the money is still legally his.
