Trump Tightens Education Requirements for Foreigners in the U.S.
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a plan that would require all applicants for student visas to verify their social media accounts. This was reported by Politico.
In preparation for the mandatory display of social media, the State Department has ordered a halt to scheduling interviews for new student visas. The decision to strengthen the vetting of potential students at U.S. universities came after months of confrontation between Trump and Harvard University administration.
On May 22, the U.S. president prohibited Harvard from accepting foreign students, accusing the school’s leadership of supporting antisemitism in light of the numerous pro-Palestinian demonstrations held inside the university's walls following the onset of Israel's military operations in Gaza.
The U.S. Department of Education had previously stripped Harvard of federal funding and several grants. The university will not receive any new grants from the government until it bans pro-Palestinian protests and restricts its inclusivity program.
The administration is also taking steps to strengthen its oversight of universities, particularly elite institutions like Harvard, which it believes are excessively liberal and tolerate antisemitism on their campuses. Meanwhile, the tightening of immigration controls continues, with several foreign students being detained.
