I Oppose Mandatory Drug Testing in Schools: Head of RA Investigative Committee

The Head of the Republic of Armenia Investigative Committee, Arthur Poghosyan, expressed his opposition to making drug testing mandatory among minors in schools. He made this statement during a session of the National Assembly.

“As a lawyer, I can express my personal opinion: I am against mandatory drug testing for minors because, in my opinion, it does not serve the best interest of the child if it is mandatory,” said Poghosyan.

According to him, it is also unclear how mandatory testing would be enforced if a child objects to it.

Poghosyan added that while he understands the purpose behind the initiative, caution is necessary when it comes to minors, as actions must be taken from the perspective of their best interests. He believes that psychologists should also provide their insights on this matter, as mandatory testing could carry risks, including causing psychological harm to the child.

It is worth noting that the former Minister of Internal Affairs, Vahe Ghazaryan, announced on January 15 that drug testing may be conducted in schools. Plans include installing cameras in schools and surrounding areas to help combat the illegal circulation of drugs.
