Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has become the first American to occupy the Holy See. He has taken the name Leo XIV. This was reported by Vatican News.

“Robert Prevost is 69 years old and was born in Chicago to Italian, French, and Spanish parents. He earned a degree in mathematics in Philadelphia and joined the Augustinian order in 1977, later becoming the worldwide leader of the order. Much of his service was spent in Peru, where he gained a reputation as an effective and versatile ecclesiastical leader. He is marked by moderation. Like his predecessor Francis, he has ties to Latin America,” the statement reads.
