130 Agencies to Close at the State Department, Reuters Reports
The restructuring of the State Department will lead to the closure of approximately 130 agencies and the elimination of at least 700 positions. This was reported by Reuters, citing a document containing preliminary plans for the reform of the foreign affairs agency.
The document presented to the Committees on Foreign Relations of the Senate and House of Representatives includes provisions for the imminent closure of 132 bureaus, agencies, and programs within the State Department, with 732 positions to be cut, many of which will be transferred to other agencies or restructured.
Specifically, according to The Washington Post, the position of Deputy Secretary for Civil Security, Democracy, and Human Rights will be eliminated. Additionally, services involved in the investigation of war crimes, as well as those related to "conflict and stabilization operations," will cease operations.
The publication notes that the State Department's reform, judging by the plans outlined in the document, will be "not as radical" as previously anticipated.
