The US Offers New Proposal to Iran
The United States is expected to face resistance from Iran regarding a proposal that aims to limit Tehran's civilian nuclear program by transferring its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to a third country, particularly Russia, in order to prevent its use for nuclear weapons development. This was reported by The Guardian.
The issue, seen as one of the main obstacles to a future agreement, was raised during preliminary negotiations between Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Special Envoy for Iran, Steve Biegun, in Muscat, Oman.
Iran maintains that its accumulated stockpile over the past four years should stay within the country, under strict oversight of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Tehran views this as a precautionary measure in case a future U.S. administration withdraws from the agreement, as Donald Trump did in 2018 when he rejected the deal brokered by Obama in 2015.
