Trump: You Are Engaging in a 'Witch Hunt'
U.S. President Donald Trump has referred to the verdict against Marine Le Pen, the leader of France's National Rally party, as a "witch hunt." Trump made this statement on the Truth Social platform.
"The witch hunt against Marine Le Pen is yet another example of how the European left uses the law as a weapon to silence free speech and censor their political opponents, even going as far as imprisoning an opponent this time," he wrote.
Trump characterized these actions as political persecution, noting that he himself has previously faced similar political pursuits.
"I don’t know Marine Le Pen personally, but I respect how hard she has worked all these years. She has faced defeats but kept pushing forward, and now, just before what could have been a great victory, she is being caught on a minor charge she probably knew nothing about. To me, it seems to be an 'accounting' error. This is very bad for France and for the great people of France, regardless of their side. Free Marine Le Pen," Trump added.
It is important to note that Le Pen has criticized the court's decision, which sentenced her to four years in prison, two of which are conditional, while the other two may be served under house arrest. The politician was also fined €100,000.
Recall that the Paris court found Marine Le Pen guilty of misusing European Parliament funds.
